Often the decision to 'go organic' is down to a farmer's concern for their surroundings. Organically certified farmers avoid the routine use of artificial chemicals fertilisers and pesticides, animals are reared without the heavy use of drugs, antibiotics and wormers, and naturally healthy soil is promoted by rotating fields between crops and animals.
Organic food is free from additives such as hydrogenated fat, aspartame and monosodium glutamate. Fresh produce, on average, contains higher levels of vitamin C, minerals and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Of course, a lot of people believe organic food simply tastes better - and many top chefs choose organic food for their restaurants.
We have an organic licence from The Soil Association, the organisation that enforces the legal definition of organic food. This covers all dried food in our own-label range, including nuts, seeds and dried fruit. You'll also find organic products throughout the store, including in our fruit and vegetable, beer and wine, fish, meat, ethnic food, dairy and bread sections. Why not pick up an organic chicken reared in the lush fields of the Lowther family's estate in Cumbria or fresh organic milk from the Robinson family's farm in Bowland. We think you'll taste the difference.
